STRENGTHENING CIVIC SOCIETY VOICES IN POLICY-MAKING THROUGH THE PROMOTION OF INCLUSIVE PLATFORMS FOR PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN KILIFI COUNTY- KENYA

Kenya Community Support Centre (KECOSCE) has received a grant from the AMKENIWAKENYA, UNDP program to implement this “Strengthening Civic Society Voices in Policy-Making through the Promotion of Inclusive Platforms for Public Participation in Kilifi County- Kenya” This program is supported the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The project will explore ways in Civic society voice in policy-making at national and County levels (Inclusive platforms for public participation and civic engagement strengthened at County and national levels) can be strengthened. The project shall contribute realization of SDG 16 and Amkeni Wakenya’s program outcome 2 Civic society voice in policy making strengthened at national and county levels (Inclusive platforms for public participation and civic engagement strengthened at County and national levels).

The project consists of three parts,

  1. Awareness raising, building partnerships, and strengthening existing networks of community organizations,
  2. Strengthening the capacity development efforts of county structures in facilitating establishment of structures for public participation, and policy dialogues as well as establishment of local information centres in partnership with the county government of Kilifi.
  3. Supporting and empowering relevant local civil society partners, internal organizational improvement for KECOSCE, and the County Government of to be able to effectively sustain program outcomes and replicating and up scaling good practices with other counties and beyond.

The Process to Achieve these objectives, KECOSCE Shall engage at both policy/legislative level and at community levels. We shall directly target 1500 beneficiaries through diverse strategies including roundtables, training workshops, sensitization forums, policy dialogues, awareness raising and media. Ultimately, this project will benefit at least 150,000 people including local community structures for engagements which include minority and special interest groups).

Successful implementation of these activities shall lead to the achievement of the following results.

  1. Inclusive platforms for public participation and civic engagement strengthened at County levels.
  2. Enhanced engagement between the duty-bearers and the right-holders.
  3. Enhanced accountability for service delivery.
  4. Promotion of civic space through the facilitation of meaningful and effective public participation.
  5. Adopt policies and legal frameworks to govern public participation.
  6. Improved engagement of CSOs with county governments on planning and budgeting
  7. Enhanced Citizen voices on the impact of projects/programs on service delivery
