Legal Officer

Job Summary:

Kenya Community Support Centre (KECOSCE) is an NGO active in the Coast and Northern Kenya regions. KECOSCE has its offices in Mombasa, Malindi  and Tana River Counties. KECOSCE’s mission is To inspire and facilitate a just, peaceful and progressive society towards promoting peaceful coexistence, good governance and sustainable social economic development at the local level and beyond. THIS LEGAL OFFICER JOB: 

KECOSCE is inviting applicants for the position of Legal Officer to join its team of self-driven staff and contribute to our mission and vision.  The main responsibilities include; doubling up as a Legal as well as HR Officer for Kenya Community Support Centre (KECOSCE).  The officer will further provide legal advice and support KECOSCE’s various departments in all legal compliance issues.

Main Responsibilities

  1. A legal officer is responsible for ensuring that the legal affairs of their KECOSCE are handled appropriately and in accordance with local and state laws
  2. Provide counsel on a wide range of issues, including contract negotiations, corporate governance, compliance with regulations, etc.
  3. Drafting contracts and other legal documents such as wills and trusts.
  4. Reviewing cases to determine whether they have legal merit.
  5. Representing KECOSCE in court, negotiating with opposing counsel, and working with developing legal arguments.
  6. Conducting research on legal issues to support litigation efforts.
  7. Interpreting laws, regulations, and policies to advice KECOSCE about how these apply to their situation.
  8. Support implementation of Access to Justice Projects, supervise and support KECOSCE’s paralegals
  9. Support civic and constitutional awareness campaigns

Qualifications and experience

  1. Degree in law from a renowned university
  2. Must have a current practicing certificate from the Law Society of Kenya
  3. While field experience in handling legal matters is an added advantage, it’s not a  must to have work experience for this appointment
  4. Computer knowledge and applications.
  5. Knowledge on labour laws and HR practices.
