BUILDING PEACEFUL AND COHESIVE COMMUNITIES IN TANA RIVER AND MOMBASA COUNTIES

PROJECT SUPPORTED BY SADES-K PROGRAM – JULY 2019 – AUGUST 2020
PROJECT DETAILS

Kenya Community Support Centre (KECOSCE) has received a grant under the FHI 360-led Safeguarding Democratic Space in Kenya (SADES-K) program to implement this project in Tana River and Mombasa Counties.

The overall project objective is to promote peace and cohesion by supporting community and policy structures in the two counties.

The SADES-K is program in Kenya aims to enhance Kenya’s ability to hold a national conversation on reforms and national cohesion, and to safeguard democratic gains, including protecting civic space, respect for human rights and observance of rule of law.

The project will feed into the Safeguarding Democratic Space in Kenya, (SADES-K) program result area 2 that aims to strengthen ethnic and social cohesion. This will be achieved through supporting county conversations and dialogues on peace, conflict management and cohesion.

For a period of one year, this project will work with diverse stakeholders including women, youth, people with disabilities, minority and marginalized communities, the County and national Government as well as civil society actors to promote peace and cohesion by supporting community and policy structures in Mombasa and Tana River Counties.

As part of our contribution towards USAID’s new Journey to Self-Reliance (J2SR), KECOSCE will collaborate with all USAID partners in the counties to enhance coordination, collaboration and efforts towards achieving J2SR.

KECOSCE has been working with communities within Tana River and Mombasa counties to address causes of conflict, including: community grievances, marginalized communities’ needs and improve community security relations, and prevent incidences of violence.

Project activities:

  1. Support community structures for peacebuilding and conflict transformation.
  2. Support formulation of county peacebuilding and conflict management policy.
  3. Strengthen county early warning and early responses mechanism for prevention of violence and proactive response.
