KENYA TO HOST INTERNATIONAL CROSS-COUNTRY PEER-TO-PEER EXCHANGE AND LEARNING CONFERENCE ON LOCALIZING PREVENTING AND COUNTERING VIOLENT EXTREMISM
(Mombasa, Kenya) The stage is set for an unprecedented collaboration between Kenya, Indonesia, and the Netherlands as the countries come together for a groundbreaking Cross-Country Peer-to-Peer Exchange and Learning Exchange on Localization efforts for prevention and countering violent extremism (PCVE).
The event, scheduled to take place on 26th January – 4th February in Nairobi and the Coast region will foster knowledge-sharing, mutual learning and
strengthening multi-stakeholder engagement in PCVE efforts between the two nations. “This ten-days events “Strategies for Designing and Implementing Local Efforts to Prevent Violent Extremism and Promote Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB)” will bring together policymakers, civil society organizations, academia, and grassroots practitioners to share experiences, best practices, and innovative solutions in the PCVE,” says Phyllis Muema, the Kenya Community Support Centre Executive Director.
The Exchange will bring together State and Non State actors including Kenya’s National Counterterrorism Centre (NCTC), the Indonesia’s Counter Terrorism Agency (Indonesian Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Terorisme) and Joint Initiatives for Strategic Religious Actions (JISRA) partners from Kenya, Indonesia and Nigeria led by Mensen Meet Een Missie of the Netherlands. The exchange will include policy dialogues, conferences to exchange best practices, lessons learnt and experiences in the Whole of Government, the Whole of Society approaches to address the threat of Violent Extremism that leads to Terrorism (PCVE-T) in both Kenya and Indonesia.
Ms. Muema expressed optimism about the Exchange’s potential impact, stating: “This initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration. By leveraging our shared knowledge and experiences, Kenya and Indonesia can develop innovative solutions to address shared challenges while learning from each other.” The outcomes of the conference will inform actionable recommendations for strengthening cross-border collaboration and contributing to PCVE efforts in both countries and Africa as a whole.
We shall host Policy dialogues in Nairobi, learning and exchange conference in Mombasa and field visits to Kwale and Kilifi counties to connect policy makers, implementers and communities working at local level to implement the National and County action plans for PCVE. Said Ms. Muema who is hosting the event in Kenya.
This initiative builds upon two previous successful peer-to-peer in person and virtual exchanges, held in Kenya and Indonesia in which the countries shared on their PCVE efforts successes and challenges and opportunities.
The peer-to-peer learning initiative is a collaboration of the Government of the Netherlands, Kenya, and Indonesia. The respective ministries and departments involved include the following: National Counter Terrorism Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BNPT) and National Counter Terrorism Centre
(NCTC) of Kenya
