Al Shabaab is planning to attack churches, hospitals and police stations in Kwale county before June 19, according to an intelligence report. The group has reportedly trained several youth and promised to support their families if they die fighting.A letter from some of the recruits, obtained by the Star, says they “plan to liberate the area to be dominated by a certain religion only”.Sources told the Star three of the recruits are brothers of a retired soldier from Matuga constituency.
“People of Somali origin from Tanzania have been meeting the youth, promising them goodies,” said a source that sought anonymity. The source said the recruits took an oath on Thursday in Boyani after three weeks of preparation and training in Kubo South.A NIS officer who did not wish to be named said there are reports of attacks.“We’re not sure of where and when,” said the officer.“These people might be the MRC, but disguised as al Shabaab.”County commissioner Evans Achoki said they are working on the report.
