Job Summary:

Kenya Community Support Centre (KECOSCE) is an NGO active in the Coast, Northern Kenya and Nairobi counties of Kenya. KECOSCE has its main offices in Mombasa. KECOSCE works with grassroots communities to facilitate an equitable and secure society through community economic empowerment, democratic governance and advocacy and Human Security, Conflict mitigation and peace building programmes. KECOSCE is seeking to recruit a communications to join its team of self driven staff and contribute to the achievement of the organization’s vision.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Officer will be based in Mombasa and will play the key role of assisting and supporting programme communication needs in KECOSCE peace and other programs as requested. The position will assist in the development and support of internal and external communications assignments. This position will work very closely with the MERL and program teams.

Communications Officer Job Responsibilities

  1. To assist in the review and implementation of a program wide communication strategy both internal and external
  2. To develop creative ways to document programmatic processes and change stories that effectively communicate program outcomes and impact. This could be in form of periodic newsletters, brochures, photos, graphics, case studies, success stories etc.)
  3. To supervise production, printing and dissemination of high quality Communication products to the targeted recipients
  4. To produce High Quality public service announcements, disseminate and document change amongst target communities.
  5. To support in the production of capacity building communication material e.g. manuals, toolkits, publications, film clips etc.
  6. Provide oversight to KECOSCE's publications and visual outputs such as presentations so they are of high quality and are disseminated appropriately
  7. Provide support to preparing periodic reports; write external and internal reports and edit funding proposals as requested.
  8. Day-to-day management of KECOSCE website or knowledge management sites including updating and ongoing monitoring, and gaining input from other staff as necessary.
  9. To contribute towards the planning of, and arrangement for KECOSCE events, in particular regarding the design and production of materials.
  10. To take high quality photographs of KECOSCE event activities, and beneficiaries stories.

 

Qualifications for the Communications Officer Job

  1. Excellent spoken and written English: general ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form; specific skills in writing press releases and articles/stories for traditional and electronic media in plain English.
  2. University Degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations; or equivalent professional work experience in the communication area combined with university degree in a related field.
  3. Knowledge of how to present information to different audiences including general public, media to high level decision-makers.
  4. Analytical and conceptual skills to think and plan strategically. Skills and experience in communication programmes, monitoring, review and evaluation.
  5. Proven ability to effectively manage relationships with media representatives, government officials, community groups and other KECOSCE partners.
  6. Knowledge of computer systems and applications, specifically interactive digital media soft wares like Adobe Creative Suites.
  7. Knowledge of photography and digital camera use
  8. Knowledge of video shooting, editing and production an advantage.
  9. Demonstrated skill in programme communication, development of Information,

Education and Communication material, documentation and publication (including web-based documentation)

  1. The ability to produce analytical and well-presented reports and publications.
  2. Good interpersonal skills: the ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels, considering cultural and language difficulties.
